When someone asks AI for pest control, is it you?

A growing share of "who should I call" questions never reach the blue links — an AI answers with two or three named operators, and everyone else doesn't exist for that customer. The work that gets you named is specific, and it's not a secret.

The new referral you can't see

Ask ChatGPT for the best pest control company in your city. Ask Google something with buying intent — "how much does bed bug treatment cost" — and read the AI Overview on top. Ask Siri who does wasp removal nearby. Each returns a short list of named businesses, assembled from what machines can read and verify about you. Two or three operators get the referral; the rest are invisible — and no ad budget buys back into the answer.

What the engines actually read

AI answers are assembled from retrievable, verifiable text: your website's plain statements, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and the places your business is mentioned — directories, local press, association pages. Three qualities decide whether you're citable:

  • Clarity — a machine can quote "Acme treats bed bugs, mice, and wasps across Windsor and LaSalle." It cannot quote "trusted solutions for all your pest needs."
  • Corroboration — reviews and third-party mentions that repeat the same facts: same name, same city, same services. The engines cross-check.
  • Structure — schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage) that labels who you are, what you do, and where, in the format machines parse first.

The site work, concretely

  • A page per pest, a page per city — "bed bug treatment in London" answered on its own page beats a services blender. One question, one page, one clear answer.
  • FAQ blocks with real questions — "How much does mouse exclusion cost?" answered in two honest sentences is exactly the shape AI answers are built from. Mark them up as FAQPage.
  • Named service areas — the towns you serve, in text, not just a map image. Machines don't read radius circles.
  • Prices where you can stand behind them — ranges beat silence; AI Overviews love a citable number with a source.

The off-site work: the citation diet

Engines trust what's corroborated. Steady Google reviews (with owner replies that name the pest and the neighbourhood), consistent listings across the directories that matter, membership pages — the Structural Pest Management Association of Ontario carries weight — and any local press coverage. This is the same prominence signal that runs the map pack: one discipline, two surfaces.

Winning Google doesn't get you the mention

The operators who win AI answers almost always win classic Google too — but the reverse isn't true. Plenty of first-page operators are unquotable: vague copy, no schema, thin services pages. The AI work is additive, it's specific, and right now in most Ontario pest markets almost nobody is doing it — which is the opportunity. The free diagnostic includes the three-engine check: your Google position, your map pack standing, and whether the AI engines can name you at all.

FAQ

Asked on the route.

How do I get my pest control company mentioned by ChatGPT?

Make your business machine-quotable: plain statements of what you treat and where, schema markup, full GBP services, steady reviews, and consistent mentions across directories and local press. AI answers are assembled from retrievable, corroborated text about you.

Do AI Overviews actually take clicks from pest control websites?

For question searches — costs, "how do I get rid of" — yes: the answer appears above the results and many searchers stop there. Operators named inside the answer capture that demand; everyone else loses it invisibly.

Does schema markup matter for a pest control website?

Yes — LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage markup label your business facts in the format machines parse first. It's not a ranking silver bullet; it's how you become unambiguous enough to cite.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It overlaps — good structure and reviews feed both — but AI visibility adds quotability: clear factual statements, real answers to real questions, and corroboration across sources. Ranking well while being vague gets you traffic but not the mention.
